From Addiction Treatment to Quality of Life: A New Model for Recovery

A professional training introducing clinicians to a compassionate, skills-based approach to problematic substance use rooted in connection, meaning, and psychological flexibility.

This professional development session introduced clinicians to the Quality of Life Enhancement model for problematic substance use, integrating motivational interviewing, existential analysis, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Rather than focusing solely on abstinence, the approach reframes addiction as a symptom of unmet needs in emotional regulation, connection, and purpose. Participants explored practical tools for helping individuals – and their families – move from shame and confrontation toward curiosity, compassion, and meaningful change.

Prepared in Partnership with Fortis BC for the Vancouver Associate of Industry Professionals

The commissioning organization sought a training that would equip clinicians and allied professionals with a modern, evidence-informed framework for addressing problematic substance use. Traditional approaches often frame addiction as a moral or behavioral failure, leaving practitioners without effective tools to address the underlying drivers of use. The goal of the session was to introduce a model that emphasizes skill development, emotional awareness, and quality of life improvement as the primary pathway to recovery.

Approach/ Challenge / Solution

Mike introduced a Quality of Life Enhancement framework that reframes problematic substance use as a signal of unmet psychological needs rather than a moral failing. Drawing on years of clinical work, he demonstrated how strengthening emotional regulation, social connection, and a sense of meaning can naturally reduce reliance on maladaptive coping strategies. The training combined conceptual insight with practical tools – from motivational interviewing strategies to curiosity-based self-reflection – helping clinicians support lasting change through compassion, skill-building, and values-driven action.
