Mark-Daniel Hughes
Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC)
I work with adults at a crossroads – people who know they can’t keep living at the same emotional temperature. Many are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, identity questions, vocational challenges, or mild to moderate substance use. My clients are ready to reconnect with their authenticity, clarify what matters, and build the internal tools to support lasting wellness. If you’re willing to face discomfort, explore what your pain is telling you, and take small, practical steps, we can do meaningful work together.
I create opportunities for individuals to be curious about themselves in ways they never have before - so they may be empowered to challenge their emotional pain instead of avoiding it.
About Me
Before I became a counsellor, I spent years working in industries that measured success through quotas, results, and profit margins. I learned quickly that, while those systems rewarded achievement, they rarely nourished the human beings inside them. I found myself craving work that made a real difference – something that aligned with my natural pull toward empathy and understanding. That realization became a turning point: the moment I began redirecting my life toward service and emotional truth.
My transition into counselling felt less like a career change and more like a homecoming. I was drawn to this work because I’ve always believed that people are capable of deep change when given the right conditions: curiosity, compassion, and accountability.
Training under Mike Mathers (whom I jokingly but affectionately call Sensei) reshaped how I view the roots of human suffering. I came to see that much of our pain is not about what’s “wrong” with us, but what’s unmet within us – needs left unheard, values misaligned, motivations unclear. When we learn to face those parts of ourselves with honesty and psychological flexibility, something shifts. We stop running from pain and start learning from it.
That belief guides everything I do. My work is grounded in both evidence and empathy, blending structured approaches with genuine human connection. I see therapy not as a place to “fix” yourself, but as a space to better understand what’s driving your behaviour and begin practicing new ways to move forward.
My Approach
My work is interdisciplinary by design, drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and strength-based approaches. Together, these frameworks encourage a balance between reflection and action – between acceptance of what is, and commitment to what can change.
In practice, that means we’ll look closely at how your thoughts, values, and behaviours interact, and identify where they might be misaligned. We’ll use curiosity and mindfulness to uncover the unmet needs behind emotional pain, and we’ll focus on building tools that help you respond to challenges with more flexibility and clarity.
Clients often tell me that working together feels like having a teammate who’s both compassionate and direct – someone who will listen deeply but also challenge them to see what’s possible beyond the limits of old narratives. My role isn’t to hand you answers; it’s to help you discover your own capacity to create meaningful change.
