UNDErSTANDING ADDICTIONS
Addiction isn’t weakness, a moral failing, or a willpower problem. It’s a learned pattern aimed at short-term relief, control, or escape. One that eventually costs more than it solves. At Wellness Evolved Counselling, we help clients uncover what drives their use and guide them in building a healthier relationship with themselves. Whether it’s substances or behaviours, we work collaboratively to help you develop the skills and insight needed for sustainable recovery.
Motivational Interviewing to strengthen readiness for change
CBT and ACT to reshape thought patterns and behaviors
Relapse prevention and integration planning for long-term balance
Invitation to Change (ITC) to guide family and community support
COMMON ADDICTIONS WE TREAT
Addiction isn’t limited to substances – it can involve alcohol and substance misuse, cannabis, nicotine, gambling, sex and pornography, digital/gaming and phone use, work, and even relationship patterns. WE provide evidence-based, shame-aware addiction counselling in Vancouver and across B.C. (virtual-first), helping you build the skills and insight needed for lasting change.
At the heart of addiction, whether it’s to substances or behaviours like porn or anything else, it really comes down to a non-acceptance of self. We resort to numbing ourselves from feeling unacceptable but the reality is we can’t shame ourselves out of shame. Instead, we need to start with curiosity about the deeply painful human emotions we are running from: shame, anger, anxiety, guilt, sadness and loneliness. Addiction is often a coping strategy to avoid feeling these ways. The hard truth is: healing isn’t about feeling better, it’s about getting better at feeling. It’s about building capacity to carry that pain toward what matters. And that’s what we do with you every step of the way at Wellness Evolved.
THE HONEST PROCESS
At Wellness Evolved, we start with clarity, not shame. Problematic substance use isn’t a moral failing or a willpower problem; it signals unmet needs and skill gaps we can train together. WE map three domains of well-being: emotional regulation, belonging/connection, and meaning/purpose so we know where to begin. WE co-create a plan that fits your life (harm reduction or abstinence), using curiosity, practical skills, and between-session practice to ensure new habits stick.
Session 1 – 3
Intake, goals, and safety. We build a trusting relationship so you can decide how and when to share your story. We set a baseline across the three domains of well-being, introduce curiosity practices, and guide you through your treatment plan. You leave with a simple first practice and a clear next step.
Session 4 – 5
Map avoidance patterns. Name the “good things” your substance use or problematic behaviour provides – and what it costs you. Add and fine-tune regulation skills for tough moments. Begin use tracking and goal setting with options that fit your reality (harm reduction, controlled use, or planning abstinence). Small, doable experiments between sessions help you test what works.
Session 6 – 8
Create a connection plan and a trigger map. Expand well-being skills – curiosity, acceptance, values micro-actions, emotional digestion, healthy grieving. Practice boundaries, communication, and assertiveness where needed. Build a plan for handling a recurrence of use with curiosity, not shame: what happened, what helped even a little, and what to try next.
Ongoing Sessions
Collaboratively identify other unmet needs and build skills for more effective living. Once things feel more stable, focus can shift to understanding how the past impacts the present – healing childhood wounding or other developmental challenges – so you can learn from past pain and be more free in the present. We keep measuring what matters in your life and adjust the plan accordingly.
Long-Term Journey
Maintain and deepen your practices. Strengthen your capacity for CONSCIOUS EMBODIED WORTHINESS – our Wellness Evolved marker of well-being – so you feel steadier, more connected, and more aligned with what matters most.
Our Approach to Addictions Treatment
Addiction isn’t just about substances – it’s about any pattern that brings temporary relief but erodes quality of life. We focus less on abstinence alone and more on restoring well-being, agency, and a life worth living.
Our Therapeutic Approach
We take a personalized approach in blending therapeutic approaches to meet you where you are including: motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness/somatic therapy, parts work (internal family systems), existential therapy, and the invitation to change model. These mothods help guide you into a deeper understanding of your emotion, thought and behavioural patterns that root you into addiction.

Friends and Family Support
If someone you love is struggling with substance use, it can feel like you’re caught between helping too much or pulling away completely. The Invitation to Change (ITC) model offers a more compassionate middle path — one that prioritizes preserving connection rather than escalating confrontation.
Grounded in CRAFT, Motivational Interviewing, and ACT, this evidence‑based approach teaches practical skills for clearer communication, healthier boundaries, and influencing change without sacrificing the relationship — whether or not your loved one is ready for help.
At Wellness Evolved, ITC‑informed coaching helps you understand substance use through a science‑based, non‑judgmental lens so you can respond with steadiness, protect your own well‑being, and maintain connection during a difficult time.
