Mike Mathers, MSc, MA, RCC
Addiction & Trauma Counsellor | Founder, Wellness Evolved Counselling
Mike is an addiction and trauma counsellor and the founder of Wellness Evolved Counselling. He believes therapy should challenge with care, not simply comfort. His work blends psychology, philosophy, and science with a disciplined practice of curiosity – transforming shame, uncovering root causes of suffering, and helping people rebuild trust in themselves.
I work best with people who are ready to be both honest and practical.
About Me
I help people who feel stuck in cycles of avoidance learn to face discomfort and grow through it.
My path to this work was personal before it was professional. Years ago, during a difficult transition, I told myself I was “fine.” I stayed productive. I stayed busy. What I didn’t do was grieve. Eventually I realized I had been trying to outrun loss – and that avoidance was keeping me stuck.
Slowing down enough to feel what hurt changed me. It taught me two things I carry into every session: it is profoundly human to avoid pain, and it is entirely possible to transform pain when you have the right support and structure. That lesson sits at the heart of my practice.
Over the past 15+ years, I’ve worked across residential and outpatient addiction and trauma settings, including serving as a clinical director. I’ve supported veterans, first responders, and individuals carrying complex trauma. I’ve led groups for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and forensic populations. Along the way, I created Resilient Living Recovery, a virtual mindfulness-based program grounded in Existential Analysis, because I believe therapy should help you live closer to what matters – not just cope.
My Approach
My stance is simple: curiosity over shame. Your behaviours are not proof of failure – they were solutions that protected you. We start by asking what a habit gives you right now. Once we understand its function, we build skill-power to replace it.
Together, we raise quality of life across three domains:
- Emotional regulation
- Belonging and connection
- Meaning and purpose
Sessions combine honest conversation with structured practice. You’ll learn regulation tools for tough moments, values-based actions that move your week forward, and connection habits that reduce isolation. Between sessions, you’ll try small experiments and bring the results back so we can adjust quickly.
A favourite tool is PAWS – Point At What Sucks. Notice it without judgment. Get curious about the next doable step.
When trauma is present, we build safety and pacing first. We work in small doses your nervous system can handle, aiming for narrative coherence – the kind of meaning that lets you reconnect with yourself and your life.
I match your effort with structure, feedback, and accountability. We can work toward harm reduction or abstinence. If a recurrence happens, we treat it as information, not failure. My psychedelic work focuses on preparation and integration only, informed by clinical trial experience and teaching. I do not provide or arrange medicine. Over time, the goal is rediscovering a conscious, embodied sense of worth – so your choices begin to feel like they’re truly yours.
Who I Work With
I work best with people who are ready to be both honest and practical.
Many are high-performing professionals, first responders, veterans, and men who were taught to hide what they feel. Others are parents, students, or leaders carrying responsibility while quietly wrestling with substance use, trauma, anxiety, or self-criticism.
They don’t want endless talk without progress. They want compassion paired with direction.
If you’re willing to show up, try small steps between sessions, and tell the truth about what helps and what doesn’t, we can do strong work together.
